The traditional championships have been decided at long last and, consequently, the wrestling season has come to an end. Archer, Gilmer and Jefferson repeated traditional state crowns, while Cambridge won its first state championship of any kind in school history. Buford swept the traditional and dual meets for the first time as did Commerce.

Each state champion topped its respective classifications. Parkview, McEachern and Lowndes made big jumps into the Class AAAAAA poll while South Paulding and Rome made headway in AAAAA. Alexander and Cass moved up behind Gilmer in Class AAAA and West Laurens and Heritage-Catoosa each debuted.

Wrestling: Cambridge wins first-ever state title

Archer won its second traditional state championship in a row as five Tigers wrestlers won state championships

Saturday at the Class AAAAAA traditional state championship meet at Chattahoochee. Archer also won dual wrestling championships the past two seasons. Each classification held its state championship meet at a different location today due to inclement weather last week, when it was originally schedule to take place at The Arena at Gwinnett.

State traditional wrestling meet postponed

The state traditional wrestling championships have been postponed until Feb. 21-22 due to inclement weather in the metro Atlanta area. The event, which had been scheduled Thursday through Saturday at the Arena at Gwinnett this week, had been previously condensed to Friday and Saturday. Now, the event has been pushed to next weekend and is looking for a new home. The Arena at Gwinnett has scheduling conflicts and will not be able to host the event.

Wrestling: Area meets recap

Class AAAAA No. 1 Pope was beaten by No. 3 Cambridge at the Area 7 meet at Kell. The Bears ended Pope’s six-year winning streak in area meets. Cambridge totaled 253 points to Pope’s 249.5. Creekview came in third with 228.5. It is the Bears’ first area championship in the program’s two-year varsity history.

Marietta upended Kennesaw Mountain in Area 4-AAAAAA 235-223 after five wrestlers won area titles for the Blue Devils.

Etowah won the Area 5-AAAAAA championship with 179.5 points to Roswell’s 160. Woodstock came in third and was followed by Walton and Lassiter.

Wrestling rankings: Cambridge takes over at No. 1

Cambridge surprised the state last week by beating previously-top-ranked Pope at the area meet. The Bears moved to No. 1 in Class AAAAA as a result and for the first time in program history.

Ola and Whitewater swapped spots in Class AAAAA after the Mustangs edged the Wildcats at the area meet.

Adairsville climbed into the Class AAA rankings after upsetting Sonoraville, which was ranked fifth last week.

Wrestling: Lithonia wins again

Fresh off its DeKalb County championship on Jan. 18, Lithonia won the Last Man Standing meet at Luella Saturday. The Bulldogs featured three weight class champions in Kirkglen Hudson, Shamel Findley and Chris Nelson. Lithonia nipped second-place Marist 195-185 while Meadowcreek came in third with 144.5, Luella took fourth with 140.5 and Lakeside-DeKalb came in fifth with 136 points. Fourteen teams competed in the event.

Lithonia and Marist will face each other again at the area tournament at Marist this weekend.

Wrestling poll: Cambridge, Whitewater climb in AAAAA

Cambridge moved up to No. 3 in Class AAAAA after winning the North Metro meet at Brookwood Friday. Also in Class AAAAA, Whitewater climbed into the top five after winning five matches last week.

Mountain View edged Peachtree Ridge and is now No. 10 in Class AAAAAA. Also in Class AAAAAA, Collins Hill climbed to No. 2 after taking the Blue Devil Brawl at Marietta Saturday.

North Hall debuted in the Class AAA top 10 after an impressive win at the Hall County Duals.

In Class AAAA, Lithonia moved into the top three after conquering the Last Man Standing meet at Luella.

Wrestling: Archer dominates Sham Slam

Archer won the Sham Slam, one of the biggest meets of the wrestling season, Saturday at Habersham Central. The meet featured all six duals state champions and nearly all of the top programs in the state.

The Tigers, the Class AAAAAA duals champions, had four overall champions and five runners-up out of 12 total grapplers. Archer’s total of 307 points dwarfed second-place Jefferson’s 197 points.
