If the Area Duals were an indication to things to come, this weekend’s state duals set up to be one of the most competitive the state has seen. Thrilling finishes were a theme this past weekend, but there were also the title hopefuls that won in convincing fashion and showed the state that they are the team to beat this weekend.

Three of our six defending Dual state champions (Pope, Buford, Jefferson) find themselves in different classifications this year and that is sure to shake up this weekend’s Area Duals. In Class AAAAAA, Pope will look to win the Area 5-AAAAAA title for the first time with a field highlighted by Etowah, Roswell and Woodstock. Pope handled Etowah 53-19 on Dec. 3 and topped Roswell the previous weekend at Hillgrove 51-27.

State traditional wrestling meet postponed

The state traditional wrestling championships have been postponed until Feb. 21-22 due to inclement weather in the metro Atlanta area. The event, which had been scheduled Thursday through Saturday at the Arena at Gwinnett this week, had been previously condensed to Friday and Saturday.
