Westlake Relays spawn top performances; Metro counties crown champions

Outstanding performances at Westlake Relays
In just six years, the Westlake Relays has become one of the top meets in the southeast. This year’s meet, which took place Saturday, once again produced a number of great performances.

On the girls side, Westlake’s Anriel Howard won the triple jump with a 37-7 ¼ feet, while the Lions’ 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams took first in times of 46.83 seconds and 3 minutes, 53.58

Starr’s Mill sweeps Fayette County championships
The Starr’s Mill girls and boys teams are the best in Fayette County, after sweeping the championship meet. The boys team edged rival McIntosh, 186-180, with Whitewater finishing third with 176 points. The Panther girls claimed the title with 196 points, Fayette County was second with 178 and McIntosh placed third with 118.

Top performances of the weekend
Several athletes turned in stellar performances in various meets last week. For the boys, Whitefield Academy senior Robby Keough took over the top spot in the state in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:18.71 at an invitational hosted by his school this weekend, while McEachern senior hurdler Martice Moore ran the state’s two fastest times thus far this season in the 300 meter hurdles

One of the state’s longest running track meets will again feature some of Georgia’s top athletes, as the Roswell Rotary Relays is scheduled for Saturday, at Roswell High School. Sponsored by the Roswell Rotary Club, the event is now in its 19th year.

Six Georgians named USA Today Track and Field All Americans

Six Georgia track athletes have been selected American Family Insurance/USA Today All Americans, with four receiving first team honors.

For the boys team, recent Our Lady of Mercy graduate Christian Coleman, St. Pius grad Daniel Haugh and Pace Academy alum Kenny Selmon were all selected to the first team.  For the girls team, Rockdale County rising sophomore Candace Hill made the first team, while Miller Grove graduate Tiffany Flynn and Forest

For the first time a region in the Georgia High School Association has selected an all-region track and field team.  The coaches in Region 8-AAAAAA put together boys and girls teams that feature the region champion in each event, plus two more athletes voted on by the coaches.

JEFFERSON – Our Lady of Mercy senior Christian Coleman has had high expectations for himself all season. On Saturday at the GHSA boys state track meet at Memorial Stadium, he fulfilled them.

Coleman set three Class A-private state records for three gold medals on the day – adding to his long jump title from Thursday – to win the meet’s overall Outstanding Performer award and High Point Champion for Class A-Private.
