School is out and track and field, along with the other spring sports, is done. But here are a couple of items before we break for the summer.

Legendary high school and college track and field coach Napoleon Cobb was inducted into the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, during a ceremony at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center in Dalton last week.

Several words can be used to describe the performance of Banneker senior Ryan Clark at the 44th edition of the Georgia High School Association Boys Track and Field Championships, a.k.a., Georgia Olympics XLIV. Outstanding. Sensational. Remarkable.

But that one that probably fits most is “finally.”

After three years of nearly unattainable expectations, Clark broke through on Saturday in Jefferson with the dominating performance the public has been waiting to see from him

It will be difficult to top the performances many of the girls turned in last week at the girls state track and field championships, but the boys will have a go at it starting today in Jefferson at the 2015 Georgia High School Association Boys Track and Field Championships, a.k.a. the Georgia Olympics.  Here’s a preview.

The athletics page on the Rockdale County website features a line that was posted last year. It reads, “Congratulations to Candace Hill – Class 6A state champion and state record holder in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.”

The rest of the page needs to be updated. That particular line, however, can stay the same as Hill, just a sophomore, eclipsed the state records she set at last season’s Georgia High

Girls State Championship Preview

The state’s top female athletes will be in action this weekend at the 2015 Georgia High School Association Girls Track and Field Championships, scheduled for Thursday through Saturday in Albany.  Here’s a preview.

The skinny:  Westlake is attempting to become the first three-time champion in the state’s largest classification since Collins Hill three-peated in Class AAAAA, 2006-2008.  Rockdale County sophomore Candace Hill, one of the nation’s best, will look to repeat

Region competitions spur big performances

Here are some of the top performances from region track meets held last week. The top four finishers in region meets advance to one of the two state sectional meets (each classification has two sectionals)  this week. The top eight finishers in each sectional meet will advance to the boys and girls state championship meets next month.

Talented freshmen emerge again
A number of freshmen made huge impacts on their teams last season.  The list includes sprinters Candace Hill of Rockdale County and T’aja Cameron of Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, pole vaulter Carson Dingler of First Presbyterian Day, and distance specialist Helen Williams of Atlanta International School, all of whom won state titles.  Also, there was Rashaad Pollard of Westlake, who took third in the 100 meters in Class AAAAAA,  Andrew

Westlake Relays spawn top performances; Metro counties crown champions

Outstanding performances at Westlake Relays
In just six years, the Westlake Relays has become one of the top meets in the southeast. This year’s meet, which took place Saturday, once again produced a number of great performances.

On the girls side, Westlake’s Anriel Howard won the triple jump with a 37-7 ¼ feet, while the Lions’ 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams took first in times of 46.83 seconds and 3 minutes, 53.58

Starr’s Mill sweeps Fayette County championships
The Starr’s Mill girls and boys teams are the best in Fayette County, after sweeping the championship meet. The boys team edged rival McIntosh, 186-180, with Whitewater finishing third with 176 points. The Panther girls claimed the title with 196 points, Fayette County was second with 178 and McIntosh placed third with 118.
