Westlake sweeps boys, girls state titles; Eight schools win first track titles

While Westlake is more widely known for its football and basketball teams, track is actually the school’s signature program.

The Lions proved that point on Saturday as Westlake capped a historic day in Georgia high school track and field by being the only school in the state to win boys and girls championships. The boys won the Class AAAAAAA title by just seven points (62-55) over second place Parkview, while the

It’s state championship weekend! For the first time in the history of the Georgia High Schools Association, the girls and boys will run at the same championship meets, and the competitions are being held at three different sites:

Hosting venue: Hugh Mills Stadium, Albany
Classifications: A Public, AA, AAA

Hosting venue:  Valhalla Stadium, Berry College, Rome
Classifications: A Private, AAAA, AAAAAAA

Hosting venue:  Grisham Stadium, Carrollton
Classifications:  AAAAA and AAAAAA

Here’s a look at some sectional performances on the girls’ side that garnered state top 10 status, along with links to all the state qualifiers (courtesy GA.Milesplit.com). All eight state meets will take place May 11-13, in Albany (Class A-Public, AA and AAA), Carrollton (Class AAAAA, AAAAAA and Wheelchair) and Rome (Class A-Private, AAAA and AAAAAAA).

The state qualifiers are set after the sectionals over the weekend. Here’s a look at some sectional performances on the boys’ side that garnered state top 10 status, along with links to all the state qualifiers (courtesy GA.Milesplit.com). Individual and team region results are starting to trickle in as athletes battle for region titles and a berth in state sectional meets in two weeks.

Spring Break is widely considered as the midpoint of the season in track and field. So here’s a look at the state’s leaders in each one of the 16 events scored at the state meets, as well as this year’s venues. Jefferson, the longtime home of the boys meet, will not host this season due to extensive renovations being completed at Memorial Stadium.
