The St. Pius boys sent coach Chuck Byrd into retirement with a state championship, but it wasn’t easy.
The Golden Lions beat region rival Woodward Academy 3-2 in the Class AAA championship match that wasn’t decided until Austin Causey fought back from a 3-0 deficit in the third set to win 7-5 at No. 2 singles and clinch the title.
“It’s really all about the kids, but it sure does feel good,” said Byrd, who is retiring after 35 years. “It does feel good to finish with a state championship.”

There’s a different set of players, but the results are the same for the Blessed Trinity girls tennis team, which plays for its sixth consecutive state championship on Saturday.
The Titans will play St. Pius for the Class AAA championship on Saturday at the Clayton County International Park in Jonesboro, where state titles in all classifications will be determined.

The golf sectionals to determine the remaining teams for the state tournament will be played on Monday at sites throughout the state. The sectionals were added to enable strong regions to have more participants and prevent a good team from missing the state playoffs because of one bad round.
All region champions must meet a qualifying score standard in order to advance directly to the state championships. Region winners who don’t meet the qualifying score advance to the sectional tournament.

The North Atlanta golf teams made history this week. The girls won the first region title in school history and the boys won the region and qualified for the state tournament for the first time.
The North Atlanta girls were led by Helen Fialkowski, Elizabeth Ray, Lily Vitgel and Maggie Richardson but will have to survive a trip to sectionals to reach the state tournament.

Christina Yang of North Gwinnett was medalist for the second straight year, but the Region 7-AAAAAA championship went to Mill Creek.
Yang, a sophomore, shot a 73 at Northwood Country Club and beat Bailey Tardy of Norcross by one shot.
Mill Creek was led by Annika Blanton, a freshman who shot a personal-best 80, and Grace Choi with an 82. Peachtree Ridge and Norcross tied for second. Bremen won its second straight Region 5-AA championship by beating Heard County in the final. Bremen has won 15 straight matches since losing to Class AAAAAA Wheeler 3-2 during the Marietta Spring Classic. Bremen is led by in singles by No. 1 Meg Cummings (17-2), No. 2 Charli Allen (18-1) and No. 3 Emily Cheshier (19-0), who has not lost a regular-season match in two years. Peter Bertran of North Oconee made a successful Davis Cup debut. Bertran was playing for the Dominican Republic and defeated Robert Farah of Colombia 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Bertran was born in the Dominican Republic, but attends North Oconee High. He is rated as the No. 5 prospect in the state. In 2013 he won ITF tournaments in the Dominican Republic, Aruba and Barbados. He has a career-best ITF singles ranking of 112 and has a 44-19 record on that circuit.

Jerry Baskin, who has coached numerous high-profile players from Georgia, was honored as a Team USA Coaching Legend at the inaugural Team USA Coaching Awards.
His students include U.S. Open semifinalist Robby Ginepri of Wheeler, Bobby Reynolds of Harrison and Brian Vahaly of Lovett..
Baskin is regarded as one of the best junior development coaches in the country over the last 40 years. He was the 2002 U.S. Olympic Committee Tennis Coach of the Year and a 2004 inductee into the Georgia Tennis Hall of Fame. He has helped more than 300 players earn college scholarships.

Calhoun earned the No. 1 spot in the Region 7-AA playoffs and completed a perfect regular season by closing the year with a 5-0 win over Dade County. The Yellow Jackets (16-0, 7-0) are led by Morgan Bird at No. 1 singles and Adrian Lively at No. 2 singles.

They went three extra holes, but no one could break the tie at the DeKalb County Golf Championships at the Sugar Creek Golf Course. That left Dunwoody and Arabia Mountain tied at 316 and co-champions.
Dunwoody, which had won the county title for five straight years, was led by freshman Will Bentson with a 77 and senior Raul Oviedo with a 78. Corey Sullivan shot 71 and Lain Barclay added an 82 for the Wildcats.
