Week 2 softball rankings

East Coweta made a jump from fifth to first in the state’s largest classification. Lassiter, which was third last week, made the jump to No. 2. Milton holds the No. 3 spot after Week 1. Parkview, which was ranked No. 8 last week, made a jump to No. 4.

Creekview overtook Cambridge as No .1 in Class AAAAAA. Alexander, previously ranked third, is in the No. 2 spot. River Ridge

After a 2016 season that saw several first-time champions emerge, one team defend its title for the third year in a row and several championship series that went to the second game, we are ready to kick off the 2017 season.

Another softball championship season is in the books as eight champions were crowned last weekend in Columbus. North Gwinnett, Cambridge, Buford, Central-Carroll, East Jackson, Harlem, First Presbyterian and Gordon Lee came away victorious.

Three of the eight champions—Cambridge, Buford and Gordon Lee—were Score Atlanta picks for preseason No. 1 in their classifications back in August, with Cambridge of Class AAAAAA and Gordon Lee of A-Public going wire-to-wire as the top teams.

Softball Championship Roundup: North Gwinnett tops Mill Creek for 7A Crown

Sloppy fielding and a sharp Chandler Dennis kept Mill Creek off balance and unable to repeat as state champions as the Bulldogs captured their first fast pitch softball championship in school history. North Gwinnett hung single runs in the second, third and fourth inning before Mill Creek could answer. Bailey Martin was doubled home by Lauren Reed with two outs to get the Bulldogs
