Notebook: State gymnastics meet Friday … Lambert LAX stays hot

The 2015 GHSA Gymnastics state meet will be held Friday night at Westminster with six teams vying for the title and nine qualifiers taking part in individual events.

Noticeably absent will be the defending All-Around state champion Katie Stuart of Lambert. Stuart missed last week’s state prelims due to a scheduling conflict with the Junior Olympics regional meet in Tampa, Fla.

In crowded Class AAAAAA, the Lambert boys make their debut at No. 1 in this week’s poll. With no undefeated teams left in the state’s highest classification, the Longhorns took the top spot based on quality of losses this season and overall body of work. The top-ranked Johns Creek boys (11-3) improved to 7-0 in Area 3-AAAAAA last week with a 20-11 win over No. 10 Northview on Friday. The win puts the Gladiators one win away from clinching the title in a tightly contested race that features the top three teams in Class AAAAAA. Centennial’s Nate Solomon scored 10 goals and added seven assists to lead the second-ranked Knights to a pair of lopsided wins in last weekend’s Georgia-Florida Showdown in Orlando, Fla. In process, he became the No. 5 scorer in high school lacrosse history, passing Casey Powell in the process.
