Duluth shuts down Brookwood in Class AAAAAA title game

MACON – Duluth coach Adel Mohsen was convinced this season was destined to be a rebuilding year for his program. Luckily, his Wildcats didn’t believe him.

Duluth got goals from Daniel Arnstein and Alexander Garuba and shut down defending champion Brookwood in a 2-0 victory Saturday in the Class AAAAAA state championship game at Mercer University. It’s Duluth’s first boys state soccer championship. Not bad for a rebuilding year.

Roswell took a 9-3 halftime lead before answering Pope’s third quarter rally and clinching back-to-back Class AAAAAA state titles with a 12-9 victory. No. 1 seed Roswell jumped to a 5-0 lead before visiting Pope found the net with two late first quarter goals to make it 5-2.

In terms of competitiveness and heart-stopping finishes, it’ll be tough for the Kell and Westminster girls to top in the state championship game the shows they put on in their respective semifinals.

Defending state champion Kell overcame a three-goal, second-half deficit against top-ranked Cambridge, and goalie Hanna Rosen protected the lead down the stretch as the Lady Longhorns advanced with a 15-13 win on Wednesday.

Defending Class AAAAAA state champion Roswell jumped to an 8-2 halftime lead after outscoring visiting Etowah 5-0 in the second quarter cruised to a convincing 15-4 victory. Roswell’s senior goalkeeper Alex Lynch had six saves and the stout defense combined with the Hornets’ team speed led to a barrage of scoring opportunities Etowah could not find an answer to.

The Milton girls are one win away from extending their string of lacrosse dominance to more than a decade. The Lady Eagles (17-4), who have won five straight state titles and nine of 10 since the GHSA began sanctioning the sport, defeated Chattahoochee, 23-10, in Tuesday’s semifinal matchup.

No. 3 seed Walton girls advanced to the Class AAAAAA state lacrosse championship for the second straight year with an 8-5 win over host Lassiter Tuesday night.
