Baseball schedule updates: Rain delays three finals, pushes Johns Creek-Lee County to Friday

Game 3 of the Johns Creek-Lee County semifinal series, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, has been rained out and will be played Friday at 1 p.m. in Leesburg.

Also, the AA and A private finals slated to start Wednesday in Savannah have been moved to Friday.

The AAAAAA finals are to be announced. The GHSA indicated that they would be played Tuesday and Wednesday next week,

Here’s a look at the eight state baseball finals with the updated, rain-altered schedule below.

They get underway Wednesday afternoon with a 5 p.m. double-header in Rome between Etowah and Woodstock in Class AAAAAAA.

The delayed AAAAAA semifinal series between Lee County and Johns Creek, scheduled for Wednesday, has been postponed again until Friday because of rain. The Class AAAAAA final now will be moved from neutral Rome and be played next

GHSA sets schedule for state baseball finals in Rome, Savannah

The GHSA released the schedule for the eight state baseball finals on Friday.

They will be played at Rome’s State Mutual Stadium, home of the Rome Braves, and Savannah’s Grayson Stadium, home of the Savannah Bananas.

Game 1 – 5 p.m. (Etowah vs. Woodstock)
Game 2 – 8 p.m. (Woodstock vs. Etowah)

Cherokee County will have its first state baseball champion in 59 years.

Etowah and Woodstock – both unranked with losing records in region play – each won a Game 3  Thursday to advance to the Class AAAAAAA championship series next week.

Etowah defeated third-ranked Mill Creek 5-4. Woodstock beat second-ranked North Gwinnett 4-3.

The baseball quarterfinals are done. On to the semifinals, which start Wednesday.

Below are recaps of the 32 quarterfinal series. Missing a couple, but will add those when information becomes available.

Most amazing might’ve been the 23 strikeouts by two Locust Grove pitchers in a 12-inning victory over McIntosh. Locust Grove has allowed three runs in six playoff games.

Walton head coach resigns with Colquitt County coordinator duties on horizon

One of the most established and respected high school football programs in the state is without a head football coach.

Maurice “Mo’’ Dixon, who has led the Walton High School Raiders for the last three years, resigned Friday. He informed his players that he was resigning in a team meeting on Friday and is expected to be named the defensive coordinator at powerhouse Colquitt County in the upcoming week.

Tuesday update: The last three second-round series were played Monday.

Alexander beat Valdosta 6-5 when cleanup hitter Gavin Harmon hit a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jason Hinchman and Justin Culpepper had singled ahead of him. It was Harmon’s second double. Adam Smith homered for Alexander. The Valdosta loss ends the high school career of D.L. Hall, who had 16 strikeouts in Valdosta’s 6-2 win in
