Player of the year: ATH C.J. Ackles, Mount Zion, Sr.

Battle for Southern bragging rights at Buford Showcase

The field of the Buford Showcase Saturday at Buford High School features several ranked teams, major-college signees and a small bit of intrigue.

The six-game event, which tips off at noon, features two nationaly ranked clubs in the 3 p.m. slot, when McEachern, ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAAAA, and No. 10 nationally by MaxPreps, takes on Porter Gaud (7-0) from Charleston, S.C. Porter Gaud is MaxPreps’ No. 1-ranked team

Harrison girls haven’t missed a beat

The Harrison girls have picked up right where they left off last spring, when the Hoyas fell one point short in the state championship against Mays.

Their lone loss this fall was to AAAAAA Norcross in the season opener, a game Harrison coach Steve Lenahan said his club could have won.

7A recap: North Gwinnett, Colquitt County take charge in second half

It’s North Gwinnett and Colquitt County.

Both won their semifinals Friday night by comfortable margins, although both games were competitive until they got away in the second half from McEachern and Brookwood, the respective losing teams.

Colquitt defeated Brookwood 31-14 after trailing 14-10 at halftime. Colquitt scored a touchdown on its first drive of the second half, then scored another touchdown on a blocked kick, and the winds had changed for

North Gwinnett 38, McEachern 17

Losing four fumbles isn’t the typical path to victory. But No. 6 North Gwinnett’s defense atoned for the transgressions by coming up with four takeaways, clearing the way for the Bulldogs to beat McEachern 38-17
