Another title for Cedar Grove; Region champs, sectional qualifiers

Individual and team region results are starting to trickle in as athletes battle for region titles and a berth in state sectional meets in two weeks.

Big year continues for Cedar Grove
The Saints won their first state title in football last December when they took out Greater Atlanta Christian, 30-19 at the Georgia Dome. The good news continued for Cedar Grove this week as the Saints boys knocked off favorite Westminster

Here’s a look at the top meets of the weekend:

Region 7AAAAA Meet (Friday and Monday). Rome will host the state’s first region meet of the season. Region 7AAAAA features perineal power Carrollton, along with Cass, East Paulding, Hiram, Kell, Paulding County, Villa Rica, Woodland and host Rome. State leaders at the midway point; Changes to state meet venues

Spring Break is widely considered as the midpoint of the season in track and field. So here’s a look at the state’s leaders in each one of the 16 events scored at the state meets, as well as this year’s venues. Jefferson, the longtime home of the boys meet, will not host this season due to extensive renovations being completed at Memorial Stadium.

Teams earn bragging rights with county championships

County championships are the unofficial mid-season mark, helping to prepare teams for the upcoming region and sectional meets next month and the state meet in May.

Bragging rights on the line at county meets this weekend

This weekend five school systems and the major private schools in metro Atlanta will host their championship meets. These contests are strictly for bragging rights and do not impact the region, sectional or state meets. However, look for some strong performances as community pride is a big motivator.

Hail to the champs! Here is a look at the state champs as the book is now closed on the 2016-2017 season:

BOYS

Private Champion: Greenforest Christian (27-5)

How the title was won:  Greenforest went on a 10-1 run in the last two minutes of the first half to blow open a close game against Southwest Atlanta Christian, and eventually route the Warriors 81-57. Senior Justin Forrest led all scorers with 36 points.
