At halftime, the Indians were trailing 24-7 against Lowndes and were down 24-0 to start the game. Late in the fourth quarter, the Indians recovered an onside kick with the score 31-22, and quarterback Malik Evans hit David Martin on the next play to make it 31-29.

Mays 48, Sequoyah 28

Mays is a perennial playoff squad but found itself in unfamiliar territory against the Sequoyah Chiefs and their Wing-T offense.

The Raiders struggled early on adjusting to Sequoyah’s pre-snap motion in the backfield and pulling linemen leading blocks on counter or trap runs. However, as the game progressed, Mays’ defense clamped down, giving the offense a cushion to pull away for a 48-28 win.

7A in review: Two region champions go down in first round

Mountain View and Marietta handily defeated No. 1 seeds on Friday in an otherwise fairly predictable first round in Class AAAAAAA.

Mountain View beat Region 5 champion South Forsyth 31-13 while Marietta beat Region 2 champ Westlake 34-7.

This is the first time that two No. 1 seeds have gone down in the first round of the highest classification since 2012, when Colquitt County beat McEachern, and Brookwood beat Lassiter.

The Archer Tigers built up an early lead on visiting Meadowcreek and coasted to a 37-0 first-round victory. Semajé Banks struck first on a 5-yard run on the opening drive, and Taiyon Palmer’s interception set up a 21-yard Michael Johnson field goal. The state playoffs begin Friday in the highest classification (and every other class, for that matter).

Here are 10 observations about the 32-team draw in Class AAAAAAA:

-The draw is fairly balanced overall. The top quarter has only two top-10 teams – No. 6 Tift County and No. 7 Brookwood – but Hillgrove and Milton are pretty good, too. That’s the weakest quarter, but it’s no easy road. Brookwood is probably the
