First-round wrap: Colquitt, Mountain View, Duluth make history

Colquitt County and Mountain View advanced in the boys state playoffs for the first time Saturday, and Duluth’s boys and girls won on the road, making for that school’s best post-season since 1970.

Here are more facts and observations from the first round of the basketball state playoffs in Class AAAAAAA.

-Colquitt County won its first state-playoff game in history with a 64-51 victory over Kennesaw Mountain.

Predictions: Pebblebrook boys to win first title; McEachern girls to win 4th in row

Below are my round-by-round predictions of the Class AAAAAAA boys and girls state basketball tournaments.

Pebblebrook, despite its seven losses, will win the boys title. The Falcons are 6-2 vs. Top 10 teams. Those include Wheeler (3-0), Westlake (1-2), Norcross (1-0) and Berkmar (1-0).

Pebblebrook defeated Wheeler last week without Collin Sexton, the best player in this classification if not the state. Sexton, the McDonald’s All-American, returned in the Region 2 final

State playoff brackets: Tough draw for defending champ Westlake boys

The region tournaments are done in Class AAAAAAA, and below are unofficial first-round matchups for the state tournament, which begins Friday.

In the boys’ bracket, defending champion Westlake is seeded to face third-ranked Newton in the second round. Playing in rugged Region 2, Westlake won the regular-seasons title, which included two impressive wins over Pebblebrook, but lost Saturday night in overtime to Pebblebrook, which got the No. 1 seed.

Region tournament previews: Wheeler is site of boys’ royal rumble

Metro Atlanta’s most exciting boys basketball region – 2-AAAAAAA – will be putting on a heck-of-a tournament this week at Wheeler’s new 3,000-seat Wheeler Arena in Marietta.

The three top boys teams – No. 2 Pebblebrook (17-7, 8-2), No. 5 Westlake (16-9) and No. 6 Wheeler (17-7, 7-3) – have played national schedules and have been nationally ranked.

Updated: Region tournament schedules, seeds coming into focus

The basketball regular season comes to a close with games Friday and Saturday, and region tournaments begin next week.

Below are the region tournament schedules for every region in Class AAAAAAA.

Update: Wheeler defeated  Westlake 78-63 on Tuesday after opening a 31-10 first-quarter lead. Wheeler’s Darius Perry scored 23 points. Westlake, Wheeler and Pebblebrook each have one loss in Region 2-AAAAAAA.

McEachern girls ready to make run at 4th straight title

McEachern’s girls basketball team – the three-time defending champion in the highest classification – is 13-6, which is ahead of last year’s pace when the Indians won their final 19 games after a 6-7 start.
