Region action starts early in 1-AAAA

2:55 pm Oct. 17, 2017

Week 9 will start on Thursday with a pair of Region 1-AAAA matchups. Region leader Americus-Sumter would tie a school-record fifth consecutive victory with a win against Hardaway at Columbus Memorial and Northside-Columbus can set its program’s highest win total since 2005 with a win over a 1-6 Shaw team at Kinnett Stadium.  As for Friday, Columbus will look for its first win over Carver-Columbus since 1990 and Westover’s playoff

Americus-Sumter posted a 31-0 win over Shaw to improve a Region 1-AAAA-best record to 4-0 and Cairo and Northside-Columbus each moved to 3-1 in region play with victories (their only region losses came  to Americus-Sumter). Cairo and Northside-Columbus will faceoff in two weeks, which will give Americus-Sumter even more mathematical probability to win its first region title. This current four-game winning streak is the Panthers’ first since 2010.

Americus-Sumter looks to gain ground in Region 1-AAAA

4:27 pm Oct. 10, 2017

Region 1-AAAA’s first-place team, Americus-Sumter, comes off its bye to take on a 1-5 Shaw team. While this game could be Shaw’s last chance to turn things around this season, Americus-Sumter has four weeks separating it from what would be the program’s first region crown. The Panthers have already defeated Westover, Northside-Columbus and reigning region champion Cairo and this week could be crucial for this reason: In Region 1-AAAA, there

Week 7 overview: Eleven teams set to see first region action

2:04 pm Oct. 3, 2017

This week will be an easy week to track Class AAAA as a whole as 12 of its 52 teams observe bye weeks. Five of the 12 teams off this week (Americus-Sumter, Cairo, Carver-Columbus, Hardaway and Westover) reside in Region 1, leaving only a Thursday night matchup between Columbus and Shaw in the classification’s only eight-team region. In addition to Columbus and Shaw, two other games (Perry vs. Howard and

Americus-Sumter has had an incredible two weeks. After scoring a huge victory over Northside-Columbus to leap the Patriots in the Region 1-AAAA standings, Americus-Sumter followed it with an even bigger win on Friday. For the first time in school history, the Panthers beat Cairo (31-15) and have positioned themselves in the driver’s seat for the region crown.

There is a lot to be playing for this weekend and there is potential for season-defining moments in several regions. In Region 1, Americus-Sumter and Cairo will settle their two-way tie for the region lead and the winner will move to 3-0. With no other teams in the region at 2-0, whoever wins this game could get additional breathing room as any future loss would still hold the edge due

The outlook has started to shift in Class AAAA as we enter the seventh week of the season. Region action continues its expansion and the overall number of games tightens. There are only 21 games in the classification this week and 13 teams will be off on their midseason byes (Upson-Lee, Richmond Academy, Baldwin, Burke County, North Clayton, Chapel Hill, Ridgeland, Blessed Trinity, Chestatee, White County, West Hall, St. Pius

Region results reset several storylines

After scoring a historic 23-20 victory over Carver-Columbus last week, Northside-Columbus suffered a critical loss to Americus-Sumter in Week 2 of Region 1-AAAA action. While the Patriots join Hardaway and Carver-Columbus at 1-1, Americus-Sumter now sits tied with defending region champion Cairo at 2-0, which cruised past Shaw 30-7. The good news is that these two teams won’t have to wait long. Cairo visits Americus-Sumter this Friday.

On Tuesday, I broke down the upcoming weekend for all of Class AAAA’s 52 teams, but today I look at five of the most intriguing on the slate.

Northside-Columbus at Americus-Sumter

Northside-Columbus is off to a historic start to the season and a win over Americus-Sumter on Friday would put the Patriots at 5-0 for the first time in program history. Northside-Columbus grabbed a No. 3 seed in Region 1-AAAA last
