Preseason all-state teams: Class AAA

(Daniel Varnado/Special to AJC)

*Best player: Cedar Grove’s Jadon Haselwood has the most impact. He’s the consensus No. 1 WR recruit nationally among juniors but also a vicious-hitting strong safety who reads and reacts well to offenses. And he returned three punts for touchdowns for a state-championship team last year.

*Best position: Linebacker. Quay Walker and Quin Williams are four-star recruits. Ahdarrious Gee was the defensive player of the year in Region 8 as a sophomore (ahead of teammate Walker). Peach County’s JaQuez Jackson is committed to Georgia Tech. Pace Academy MLB Realus George has ACC offers.

*Highly recruited: Pace Academy OL Jamaree Salyer is the consensus No. 1 guard prospect nationally. Six others are rated among Georgia’s best 20 players in their graduating class, and each is a major blue-chip recruit. They are seniors Kyler McMichael of Greater Atlanta Christian, Kearis Jackson of Peach County and Quay Walker of Crisp County and juniors Haselwood, Chris Hinton of GAC and Luke Griffin of North Murray.

*Lowly recruited: Savannah’s Malik Nesbit, the reigning Region 3-AAA player of the year, is getting a wide range of looks, including attention from Georgia Tech, but he’s low-profile. Nesbit was captain on the Blue Jackets’ best team (9-3) in 23 years. He had 1,676 all-purpose yards – 892 rushing on just 88 carries, 523 receiving on 34 receptions and more than 250 returning. He scored 20 touchdowns, two on punt returns.

*What else is new?: Greater Atlanta Christian has five selections, and Calhoun has none. That doesn’t mean that Calhoun isn’t its usual state-contender self, but it’s odd. Calhoun has had a least one first-team all-state player every year since 2001.
