Rankings rundown: Week 7

Every Sunday, the AJC releases its top 10 polls for both boys and girls. Here’s a rundown of those teams and where they’re at at this point in the season.

Boys

1. South Atlanta (12-1)
Region record: 4-0 in Region 6 (first place)
Notes: The last documented game played by the Hornets was on Dec. 23. It’s unclear if they’ve played any games between then and now, but if not their first action in more than two weeks will come on Wednesday at region opponent Washington (4-11, 1-4). They’ll host B.E.S.T. (2-10, 1-3) on Friday.
2. Early County (12-2)
Region record: 4-0 in Region 1 (first place)
Notes: The Bobcats picked up three wins last week, including a 72-69 thriller over Class A-public’s No. 1 Calhoun County. They take on Miller County (5-4, 3-3) on Tuesday, but their big matchup with region implications takes place on Friday against No. 10 Thomasville.
3. Butler (9-5)
Region record: 4-1 in Region 4 (second place)
Notes: The Bulldogs picked up a pair of road region wins over Screven County (88-55) and Jefferson County (57-46). Junior guard Mardrez McBride averaged 19.5 points in those wins. They’ll take over first place in the region if they can win at first place No. 9 Westside on Tuesday.
4. Therrell (9-5)
Region record: 3-1 in Region 6 (tied for second)
Notes: Like South Atlanta, the Panthers have yet to play a game of record in 2017. That will change on Tuesday when they host Hapeville Charter. They also play road games on Friday and Saturday against B.E.S.T. and KIPP, which is tied with Therrell for second place in the region.
5. Laney (9-3)
Region record: 2-1 in Region 4 (third place)
Notes: The Wildcats picked up a 90-53 win over Harlem last week and have no games scheduled for this week. Next up will be a game at Evans next Monday.
6. Dublin (11-4)
Region record: 2-0 in Region 3 (second place)
Notes: The Fighting Irish went 3-0 last week with the closet game a 15-point win over Washington County. They play three more games this week starting on Tuesday at Johnson County, their last non-region contest of the regular season.
7. Glenn Hills (11-5)
Region record: 3-2 in Region 4 (fourth place)
Notes: The Spartans were 2-0 last week, most notably beating No. 8 Josey 44-42. The win was a team effort, as no Spartan scored in double figures. Juniors Eric Farmer and Timmy Sellers and freshman John Whitehead all led the Spartans’ scoring efforts with 9 points each. They host region opponents Screven County and first-place No. 9 Westside this week.
8. Josey (12-4)
Region record: 2-3 in Region 4 (sixth place)
Notes: The Eagles suffered through a tough last week, going 0-2 including against region opponents Westside and Glen Hills. Their lone game this week is a region contest at home against Jefferson County.
9. Westside-Augusta (5-4)
Region record: 4-0 in Region 4 (first place)
Notes: The Patriots’ overall record may be underwhelming, but being undefeated thus far in a competitive Region 4 is what has them ranked. Up next is No. 3 Butler, a home game on Tuesday.
10. Thomasville (8-6)
Region record: 3-0 in Region 1 (second place)
Notes: The Bulldogs went 2-1 last week, including an ugly 60-28 loss to Tift County, the No. 7 team in the high class. But they’re in control of their own fate in region play and can stay in prime position if they can beat No. 2 Early County at home on Friday.
