Four Questions with Athens Academy coach Josh Alexander

Football, FourGHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We’ll report from a different head coach each day.

Josh Alexander, Athens Academy

1. What is the most memorable game you’ve been a part of as a player or coach?“This was at the Forest Park Recreation Center. I played for the Raiders, and I was coached by my father, Tony Alexander, and my best friend’s father, Russell Paterson. We were playing the undefeated Cowboys and we beat them. It was so awesome! I love youth sports and what they stand for. There were so many great players at the Forest Park Recreation Center. I would not trade those days for anything.”

2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why?“I do not have a son, but I would love for my daughters to play for Steve Brooks. He has been such a great friend and mentor. I love everything he stands for.” [Brooks, a former head coach at Clarke Central, is now an assistant at Grayson.]

3. What is your pet peeve as a coach or favorite saying/motto?“Quote: ‘Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.’ -1 Thessalonians 4:11, 12.”

4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed?“I would like to see the targeting rule be enforced more. I am tired of watching peel-back blocks/hits behind the ball hurt players. We are trying to make our game safer. This is one rule that could easily be enforced. There is no need to crack a player that is not looking. I also do not believe in cracking defensive ends. I think it is bad coaching if you scheme plays to do this. It is not fair for a player to have a running start and hit another player that has his hand on the ground inside the box.”
