Daily List: Schools with the most victories against top-ranked teams

Ever wonder why teams act like they’ve won a state championship when they beat a No. 1 team? In Georgia, only 221 schools in state history have ever done it, and 42 of those schools no longer exist. It’s not easy. The record of No. 1-ranked teams is 3,300-484-56 – a winning percentage of .867 – according to new research by the Loren Maxwell and the Georgia High School Football Historians Association. Maxwell used rankings of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution back to 1982, and the Atlanta Journal and Atlanta Constitution back to 1952. Here are the schools that have beaten a No. 1-ranked team at least five times, and their records vs. No. 1 teams. In case you are curious, the teams with the worst luck with No. 1 teams are Monroe (0-23) and Jackson (0-23).
