GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We’ll report from a different head coach each day.
Welton Coffey, Camden County
1. Who is/was the most influential person in your coaching career? “Coach Douglas White, former head baseball coach, JV football and algebra III/trigonometry teacher at Raines High School in Jacksonville, currently A.D. and head basketball coach at Raines. Coach White taught without speaking. His actions as a teacher, coach, husband and father spoke volumes. He was passionate about teaching math, coaching and being a father to his two sons and twin daughters. His wife and entire family were supportive of athletics and the players he coached. As a high school student/athlete, I often asked God to bless me with a life just like coach Douglas White. I wanted to be just like him in every way. He was a wonderful example of a great coach and a great man.”
2. Who is the best Georgia player you ever faced? “Lowndes High School’s Tre Jackson, MLB. There are a number of awesome players that I have seen in the state of Georgia since I have arrived (2003), but Tre Jackson was a force to be reckoned with every time we played. He had a freakish ability to read everything we were doing offensively. He seldom made false steps, and when he arrived to make the tackle … it was violent!”
3. What is the best team you ever faced as a coach? “There were two teams: Belle Glades Central (Fla.) in the 1997 4A state championship game while I was at Raines. We won, but they were talented, physical and fast. Also, Camden County in the 2003 AAAAA state championship game while I was coaching at Valdosta. We were playing good football at that time, but Camden was running on all cylinders. Wow!”
4. If you were Gary Phillips, the new head of the GHSA, what would be the first rule that you would try to change? “Play a scrimmage in the spring against another school and the process of reclassification of schools.”
