AAAAAA blog: What Kell team is most likely to win state?

By Todd Holcomb

Twelve teams that have played in the Corky Kell Classic, which will be played for the 23rd time Friday and Saturday at McEachern, have gone on to win state championships the same year. The most recent was Grayson in 2011. (List below.)

Preseason polls would need to be badly wrong for it not to happen in 2014. The top six teams in the Class AAAAAA rankings – McEachern, Colquitt County, Archer, North Gwinnett, Tucker and Mill Creek – are playing as part of the seven-game event. So is defending AAAAAA champion Norcross (No. 9) and the No. 2 team from AAAA, Sandy Creek.

In fact, here are the matchups with the teams’ rankings:

Friday
6 p.m. — North Paulding vs. Creekview
8:30 p.m. — No. 3 Archer vs. No. 2 Sandy Creek (AAAA)
Saturday
9 a.m. — No. 5  Carrollton (AAAA) vs. No. 7 Kell (AAAAA)
11:45 a.m. — No. 6 Mill Creek vs. No. 2 Colquitt County
2:45 p.m. — Brookwood vs. Valdosta
5:30 p.m. — No. 9 Norcross vs. No. 5 Tucker
8:45 p.m. — No. 4 North Gwinnett vs. No. 1 McEachern

CC Hogs - this is the year!!!

Want it, reach for it, and then grab it - and don't let it go!

Nobody, no team, no nothing beats Colquitt this year - bank it!

@AVikingFan - Amigo, I'm here.  Ms. Violet has me on "turtle detail" down here on Amelia.  Barely gives me time to post.  Good Luck with Plant this weekend.  We're gonna try to survive Hoover.

BI think the top two teams this year will be Colquitt and McEachern. NG will be good again but Sphire will find new ways to lose.

GHSFDaily has been going at it almost a month now and hasn't mentioned Peachtree Ridge among the AAAAAA elite! Is the world coming to an end? What's up with that ?

I think Colquitt will have the best D in the state and North Gwinnett will have the best O in the state.  I wish they were playing each other Saturday.

"JAB", with my new screen name.   This first week of play will tell some early stories on many of the teams whom will be playing in the Corky Kell Classic.  How strong are the Gwinnett County teams?  Is Tucker ready to compete on the AAAAAA level?  Is Valdosta ready to get back as a team to beat in the highest classification?  Is North Gwinnett still in hunt for their first state championship?  Will McEarchern hold on to the top spot?  All these questions and more will be answered this weekend.

Colquitt always have a nice squad..They just have to cut down on the few mistakes that usually cost them when it count ..Most importantly your head coach's ego sometimes distracts from seeing the big picture.

Colquitt just needs the OL to step up some and theyll be fine. They have elite playmakers at WR and RB

Colquitt has some work to do on the O but the defense is in fine shape.

You mean the best coach in the state? Colquitt had the team last year but was just unfortunate to play on that mess of a field in Norcross last year. Props to Norcross though, they made one more play than Colquitt
