Football coach Steve DeVoursney, who led Griffin to its first state championship in 35 years last season, resigned Tuesday night ahead of a specially called school-board meeting Thursday that will discuss an investigation that began in October, according to Griffin-Spalding superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones.

‘’This process began based on a complaint we received that dealt with the school year 2010-11,’’ Jones said. “It’s not about this year’s (2013) football team. It’s a personnel matter. The board will consider his request for being release from his contract.’’

Jones would not provide details of the complaint except to say that the school system would release its findings after the 3 p.m. meeting. Jones said it involved a student-athlete who attended Griffin but never played football for the school.

DeVoursney, reached Wednesday, said the complaint was not directed at him but declined to comment further until after Thursday’s meeting.

DeVoursney said he told his players of his decision Wednesday morning.

“Today will be my last day at head football coach at Griffin,’’ DeVoursney said. “We won a state championship. Lost a bunch of coaches. It was a long season. Felt like it’s time to move on and pursue other things. I have no idea where I’ll coach again. I’m wide open. I’ll start looking today and see what happens.’’

DeVoursney was 128-35 in 13 seasons at Griffin. His teams reached the state semifinals in 2005, 2008 and 2009 before winning Class AAAA in 2013 with a 15-0 record.

“Somebody’s going to walk into a good situation,’’ DeVoursney said. “They have facilities, lots of support and money in the booster club. It’s set up for someone to come in here and keep this thing rolling.’’

DeanMorgan, I agree completely.  I think it's grossly irresponsible for the AJC and Mark Bradley to allow Thomaston2014 to post such strong and serious allegations.  If I were Coach DeVoursney, I would be hiring a lawyer and pursue the blogger as well as whomever has editorial control over this column.  On most of the blogs on this website, the comments 'have been removed due to violations, etc.' or they are spam.  Yet the AJC and Mark Bradley allow slanderous comments to post?

Someone may want to tell Thomaston2014 that he or she can be held liable for slander even when they do it anonymously on the internet.  And that said individual can then be charged and sued.  And why is the AJC allowing this person to post these personal attacks anyway?  What if someone was saying that about Mark Bradley?  Those comments would be deleted immediately and the person blocked from making further comments.  So ajc management please read your own guidelines for posting comments and follow them.

@ Thomaston2014 be careful of assuming that one's past is true, there could be someone assuming that your past is also true.....besides, don't judge Devo from his past, he doesn't live there anymore.

Being as his past includes Rape and other counts of attempted rape from his High School days. I am Glad to see Karma is finally getting this liar with a severe mental illness. If those who were scared all would speak out he would be facing jail time. He should never be allowed to work with teens again. This is the TRUTH. Like it or NOT.

Still confused  on the sudden resignation. We need more facts. No one who just won a state championship quits just like that. More facts needed before forming opinion.

Some county will scoop this highly successful coach up! Griffin's loss!  What a shame they couldn't support him and see what they have lost. Shame on Spalding County School Board! Guess you can wait 35 more yrs for a championship.

@Thomaston2014  When you get a job anywhere they check your criminal record and they would not have allowed him to get a job working with teenagers if what you say is true. Next time you want to make such serious accusations you might want to check your facts. He and his family are obviously going through a lot and it is really unnecessary to try to make things worse for them.

@newnancat Let them look back on his history of Rape and attempted rape . That should explain it all.

I agree with you Griffin Alumni 2012.  Thomaston 2014 sounds like maybe someone jealous of Devoursney's success or perhaps a former high school peer who maybe wanted to date him?
