Looks like two great title games

By Stan Awtrey

At long last the finals are here. The tournament has produced two great games for Saturday at the Macon Coliseum. Buford will play defending state champion St. Pius in the girls final at 3 p.m. Buford will play Morgan County in the boys final at 4:30 p.m. It won’t be the first dance for these finalists.

The St. Pius girls derailed Buford a year ago in the quarterfinals. The Golden Lions went to Buford and beat a Wolves team that was loaded with talent, but a little disjointed and not playing together. St. Pius had been stunned the previous year in the first round and was eager to erase that memory. Pius came away with a 56-43 win and went on to win the state championship and beat Dawson County by 22 in the title game.

Buford and Morgan County’s boys have already played twice this year. Morgan County won the season opener and Buford won the rematch at the end of the season. They are two of the hottest teams in the state. Buford has won 20 straight games and Morgan County has won 15 of 16, the lost coming against Buford.

More on these compelling matchups as the week goes by.

By the way, a poll last week asked readers who would play for the state championship. Although there may have been some votes cast after the results were determined, 73 percent of voters correctly picked Buford and St. Pius, but only 39.7 percent voted for the Buford-Morgan boys.

Why would you get on a AAA blog and complain about the AAAAAA game?

What a silly and clueless little article. Apparently the author isn't even aware that the AAAAAA boys state championship game will take place Saturday in the Macon coliseum as well. Tift county will battle Wheeler. The AJC has Tift county ranked number three while Wheeler has been ranked number one some as well as very high all year. This huge matchup would have, at least, been mentioned by a competent writer.

Congratulations to Buford. What a great accomplishment. While you are on the subject I wanted to express the following:

Congratulations to the St. Pius X Golden Lions for earning the GADA Director's Cup for the fourth time in the last five years. This honor recognizes the school as the top performer in AAA athletic programs in the state of Georgia. This annual award is presented to the top male program, top female program, and top overall program in each classification. This year, thanks to the high scoring athletic teams at St. Pius X, the school took all three awards.

St. Pius X Catholic High School has finished third in the 2012-13MaxPreps Cup national rankings recognizing the top high school athletic programs in the nation.

While it is true what you say about Buford's success being a sore sport for some I think that it is also true that a very large number respect what Buford has done. I choose to support the later and have noticed that at least the vocal Buford supporters have a consistent theme of feeling hated on. That's unfortunate. Again, congratulations to Buford and to SPX.

Champions make haters come out of the woodwork...

For that reason many dislike Buford..

Best to the Wolves!!

If Buford's boys and girls can win, BHS has won the championship in every sport thus far. On the various chat boards, that is a sore spot for a lot of people.

@twentysixpointtwo  Please note that this is the AAA blog. If you're looking for information on the AAAAAA tournament, you should look under the appropriate blog. This blog is limited to AAA information.
