Here’s what to look for this weekend in Class AA:
• Region 4 remains one of the more competitive regions in the state, with Crawford County (9-1 in Region 4) leading Northeast Macon (7-3), Monticello (7-3) and Taylor County (6-3). Alexander High School in Douglasville is enjoying a banner athletic school year. The Cougars’ football team reached the playoffs for the time in school history and then made a run to the quarterfinals. Now, the Alexander boys basketball team, which reached the Elite 8 last season, has surged to No. 3 in the latest AAAA rankings. The Cougars have won 12 in a row are undefeated in arguably the toughest AAAA region and will be going for a sweep of No. 10 Sandy Creek on Friday. Here are the 10 best games and story lines this weekend in Class AAAAAA basketball.
Several teams can clinch No. 1 seeds in their regions. Still waiting to hear when the Hillgrove-Pebblebrook game from Tuesday will be rescheduled. That was for first place in Region 4-AAAAAA. We realize that some of Friday’s games might be postponed because of weather as some schools have announced closings already.

The top-ranked Allatoona boys basketball team is scheduled to travel to Kentucky this weekend (weather permitting) to participate in the King of the Bluegrass Showcase at Fairdale High School near Louisville.
The Buccaneers will face host Fairdale at 7:30 p.m. Friday and meet Iroquois (Ky.) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Fairdale (8-11) is led by senior guard Cory Thomas, who ranks fourth in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association in scoring at 27.0 points per game. Iroquois is ranked No. 13 in Kentucky by MaxPreps and No. 532 nationally, one spot behind Cobb County team Hillgrove.

The regular season is almost completed. In about two weeks teams will begin the region tournaments and start to determine the four teams that will represent their league in the state playoffs.
One of the biggest boys basketball games this weekend will be at Thomson, where the No. 9 Bulldogs will try to derail No. 1 Washington County on Saturday.
Washington County is 17-1 and undefeated in the league. Thomson is 14-1 with only one league loss – that a 53-43 setback to Washington County on Jan. 14.

Here are the latest Georgia High School Association/MaxPreps basketball power ratings. The first number in parenthesis is the team’s power rating last week, the second is its ranking in this week’s Atlanta Journal Constitution Top 10 poll.

Fresh off its DeKalb County championship on Jan. 18, Lithonia won the Last Man Standing meet at Luella Saturday. The Bulldogs featured three weight class champions in Kirkglen Hudson, Shamel Findley and Chris Nelson. Lithonia nipped second-place Marist 195-185 while Meadowcreek came in third with 144.5, Luella took fourth with 140.5 and Lakeside-DeKalb came in fifth with 136 points. Fourteen teams competed in the event.
Lithonia and Marist will face each other again at the area tournament at Marist this weekend.

Alpharetta, Westminster and Woodward Academy raced to victories at last weekend’s 44th Metro Swimming and Diving Championships. Westminster, which hosted the event, saw both its boys and girls place in the top three of their respective meets—good enough for a combined team win (311.5 points to runner-up Marist’s 309). Alpharetta’s boys edged the host Wildcats by the slimmest of margins, 176 points to 175.5. The Woodward girls finished first ahead of Marist, with 200 points to the War Eagles’ 169. Like Westminster, Marist placed in the top three in each of the meets.

Cambridge moved up to No. 3 in Class AAAAA after winning the North Metro meet at Brookwood Friday. Also in Class AAAAA, Whitewater climbed into the top five after winning five matches last week.
Mountain View edged Peachtree Ridge and is now No. 10 in Class AAAAAA. Also in Class AAAAAA, Collins Hill climbed to No. 2 after taking the Blue Devil Brawl at Marietta Saturday.
North Hall debuted in the Class AAA top 10 after an impressive win at the Hall County Duals.
In Class AAAA, Lithonia moved into the top three after conquering the Last Man Standing meet at Luella.
